Ohio's First Prize Fight

OUTRAGE

A flagitious outrage upon our laws, and upon decency and humanity, was perpetrated in the vicinity of our city on Monday afternoon, June 26 [1837]. An Englishman and an Irishman, both of some recent importation we presume, appointed Cheviot their theatre for the sports of the ring. A large concourse of people gathered together; the two demi-bruts actually met and, for a bet of money (it is said $1000), beat and bruised each other shamefully. We call attention to this violation of the law. All concerned, and especially the boxers, and their associates of every description, are guilty of a riot. Let witnessed be summoned before the grand jury, and an example be made of the parties, no matter who they may be, that has countenanced by their presence and approbation, this brutal exhibition. It is the first of the kind that has disgraced our state: it is of importance that it should be branded with all the reprobation that can be heaped upon it.
